Build your own computer

1-Overview-Of-Parts
Many of my folks asks a question how we can build our computer or assemble parts into a performing computer. Building your own computer is much cheaper than purchasing a company build computer. No single company develops each and every component of a computer. As a result they then procure it from companies and assemble in their name/brand. Developing a custom computer provides much better options to us. We can develop a system as per our requirements and in budget. I will list some basic steps to help you people build your own computer.
Before we proceed just make up a max budget in mind.
Expert advice: Each component are very much dependent on other. CPU has different socket types which fits on MoBo, RAM could be 1333 or 1600 or 1866 Mhz that too depends on the MoBo. So get a MoBo which could be upgraded later which supports more RAM, has SATA III ports, have onBoard graphics and also support PCIe slot for adding graphic card in future if you plan to play HD games.

Step 1: Get all the required components

The first step is to gather all the required components of a computer. Some of the required components are

  1. CPU or the processor – CPU is the main component and is the brain of computer. A wide variety of CPU are available based on your requirement. The most used processors available are Intel and AMD processors. Each have its own merits and demerits. AMD processors are good for gaming, as they offer APUs and are cheaper than Intel ones. However the multiprocessing capabilities of Intel is better. So i would suggest AMD if you have low budget and Intel if budget is not your concern. Some of the very Good CPUs are Intel I5 and I7.
Expert advice: Get an Intel i5 processor. It is mid range and highly performing. Latest generation would be best.
  2. Motherboard – All the components are placed on a board which acts as ‘Nervous System’ for the computer, this is our motherboard. Several things to be considered while buying a motherboard like the socket type, memory, expansion slots, storage slots, on-board technology etc. Each socket type will accept the CPU build for that socket type only. How much memory can it accommodate, i.e. max amount of RAM. The expansion slots can be used to add expansion cards. Consider looking at the storage interface. SATA is used mostly and a recent SATA 3 supports high data transfer speed of 6 Gbps. Most motherboard have onboard features like Sound, Ethernet etc.
  3. Expert advice: Pure Intel Mobo are bit expensive but intel based chipset manufactured by other companies are cheap and great. Some of them are GigaByte, ASUS, MSI.

  4. RAM (Random access memory)  – This is also an important component and is part of memory where frequently accessed files are kept temporarily to access them quickly. If you are using a 32 bit system it is limited to 4 GB but 64 bit supports upto 192 GB. The more the RAM, better is the system. There are several type of RAM available currently like DDR3, or DDR4.
Expert advice: Check the max RAM supported by your MoBo. If it supports 16GB with 2 slots, get 8Gb RAM of single slot.

  1. Thanks a lot for an awesome post, the component recommendation is really helpful. I am an engg. student and was looking to buy a new PC. The cost in the local market are too high compared to amazon. Going to order various components. Just one thing if we can trust them for buying costly processors and all?

    • Hi Amit,
Thanks for your comments. Glad my post helped you. And yes, you can fully trust amazon for the genuine products with manufacturer guarantee. Amazon have sellers who are mostly authorized sellers.
